What to bring to a family photoshoot

You have an upcoming maternity or family photoshoot booked and you’re wondering what you should bring along to your session.

You know there’s no chance you’ll forget the kids (who have been asking for the 47th time if it’s time to go yet), but what else should you have at hand to make the day run smoother?

Read my Photoshoot Checklist guide below to ensure you turn up at your shoot with all the necessary bits & pieces to make it the smoothest, most fun experience you’ve ever had!

First things first - get ready for your shoot

  • Check that all clothes fit and coordinate well, and steam / iron them ahead of time

  • Set out at least one change of clothes for each family member (just in case things get a bit muddy!)

  • Set aside everyone’s outfit shoes and accessories so they are ready to go

  • Ensure everyone’s hair is washed the day before

  • Come with makeup/hair done. Less is more!

What to bring to your shoot - Checklist

  1. One spare outfit for everyone. You probably won’t use any of these extra clothes, but it’s best to be prepared!

  2. Hairbrush / comb. For those windy days!

  3. A small mirror and makeup in case any touch ups are needed for the ladies (this is a rare occurrence and the makeup pouch can usually be left in the car.)

  4. Layers as required for colder weather. Cardigans / jumpers / hats in earthy tones work wonderfully as props and to keep warm. Best to avoid wearing your coat in photos - layer up and choose warm clothes instead.

  5. Wellies. Some outdoor spots can be muddy even in dry weather, especially in the mornings.

  6. Wet wipes. Because they are lifesavers!

  7. Water and snacks for you & the little ones. Please choose snacks that are mess-free, such as plain biscuits, bananas, green grapes, oat bars, plain cereal & crackers. Chocolate or berry-based foods are enticing, but we know how quickly those can turn a clean outfit into a grubby one!

For children who don’t yet walk:

  1. A carrier (if available). A carrier allow us to move easily from spot to spot and venture into pretty areas further from the main paths.

  2. A buggy. In lack of a carrier, a buggy can used on main paths or in areas of more even ground.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is life! You are encouraged to breastfeed whenever needed throughout our session, and I am open to capturing this intimate moments between you & your children as long as you are comfortable with it. I will always ask you first.

What to expect on shoot day?

I look forward to capturing the precious, intimate moments between you & your family that often go unnoticed. Those loving-glances, fingers-through-hair, dancing-hand-in-hand kind of moments.

I will ask you to cuddle, kiss, walk, hold hands, jump and dance with one another, and I will give you plenty of ideas and prompts on how to move to make each shot a great one.

MATERNITY AND FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY PACKAGES

The day doesn’t have to run perfectly smoothly for your images to be amazing.

  • Children might cry in the car on your way to the shoot. Your dress might not quite fit as well as you had hoped. The weather might not play ball.

That’s ok! Don’t let it ruin your day. The unexpected can turn out to be absolutely magical.

  • Everyone feels awkward in front of the camera to begin with - myself included.

I will talk to you, guide you and prepare you so you’ll move and interact naturally with one another and forget that I’m even there!

  • An overcast sky photographs beautifully, and a very light drizzle shouldn’t stop us. I will be in touch to reschedule in case of proper rain.

Looking forward to stepping into nature and capturing it all.

Love,
